A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the period preceding former President Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on Monday seeks to ban government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
